Stories - Scripture Union

The Scripture Union movement started in Peru

back in 1927 when a missionary formed an Unión Bíblica Club in his school in Huantura, near the city of Cuzco, with a regular attendance of about 40 boys. They met regularly to read the portion of scripture found on the UBP Bible Reading Card of the day, to comment on it and find out what God had to say through His Word to them that day.

Currently

the Unión Bíblica Del Perú (UBP) has six ministries: Bible Use, Schools, the Deaf, Street Children, Camping and Medical Work.

UBP have been working with street boys

for over fifteen years. The first ten years were in the street itself; meeting them there. Then, in the mid-1990’s, the first street boy centres were opened in Lima and Iquitos, and, contrary to all predictions, these “irreversible, hardened, incurable little delinquents” are doing ever so well in school – 30 in Lima and 50 in Iquitos. UBP are now looking for help in developing their refuges removed from the big cities, for which more of the boys are ready. A good number of attempts have been made with street boys and have failed, because they were brought straight off the street into a refuge. They must be weaned from the street, and this is the process that takes place at the Lima and Iquitos centres.

Centro Girasoles (Sunflowers Centre) in Lima

provides opportunities for the boys to work in one of UBP micro enterprises – a car park, a taxi service, a bakery or a T-shirt printing shop. These along with Christian teaching and love can begin to meet the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of the children.
